Aug. 23/83 J. M. Carmichael Auditor (Document) Application for Relief of Maimed Soldiers. The State of Alabama County of Clay Personally appeared before me, Harrison M. Evans, Judge of Probate of said County, W. Allen, who being duly sworn deposes and says: That he was a citizen of this State, at the time he rendered the military service hereinafter referred to; that he was a citizen of this State, at the time of the approval of the act for the relief of maimed or disabled soldiers, approved Feb. 23, 1883, and is now a resident of said State. Applicant further deposes and says, that he was a member of Company G of 14 Regiment of Alabama Volunteers, in the military service of the Confederate States, and while in the discharge of duty in such service, he was on the 6 day of May 1864, at Wilderness in the State of Virginia wounded, and in consequence of such wound, lost his left arm; that his present business or employment is that of a farmer. Allen of the County of Chambers Report of County Board We the undersigned members of the Pension Board of Examiners for the County of Chambers, hereby certify that we have examined the within application by law directed and we find that said application should be granted, and the applicant placed in class 2. Moore Board of Examiners for Chambers County Finding of State Board of Examiners We, the undersigned State Board of Examiners, hereby certify that we have examined the within application, and recommend that said application be granted and that the applicant be placed in class 2 under the act of Feb. 10th, 1899. The State of Alabama, Chambers County. To the Honorable Board of Pension Examiners of said County: Your petitioner, Wm. Allen, respectfully represents to your honorable board that he is a resident of Chambers County in the State of Alabama; and that he resided in said State on the first day of February in the year 1899; That he enlisted in the service of the State, or Confederate States, as a Private in Company G in the 14th Ala Regiment on the (left blank) day of Feb. 1862, at New Site in the State of Alabama, and that he was honorably discharged from such service on the close of war 1865; that he did not desert the service of the Confederate States, or the State of Alabama; That he was wounded at the battle of Wilderness in the State of Va., That he is now unable to make a living by manuel labor on account of loss of arm; That he is at the time of filing this application 55 years of age, and that his post office address is Truett, Alabama; That he does not own property either in his own name, nor that of his wife, to the value of $400 dollars, and that he has no children upon whom he can depend for support. You petitioner files herewith a complete schedule of all the property owned by himself and wife. In consideration of the forgoing facts, your petitioner asks that his name be placed upon the pension rolls in the class that your honorable board may adjudge him to belong, that he may participate in the division of the fund provided for the relief of Confederate and Alabama soldiers and their widows, by act of the General Assembly approved February 10, 1899. Personal Notes: I had originally thought that perhaps this could be William Allen, who had married Mary Ann Quattlebaum. However in a book called "Once Upon A Time" by David Hall, I found a picture of William Allen, husband of Mary Ann, and he had both of his arms in the picture. I do not know who this gentleman is.
