D, 14th Reg’t (Cover of Document) Copy 834 Widows The State of Alabama Chambers County, Application for Relief by Mrs. Mary Willoughby Under act approved February 13, 1891. For the relief of needy Confederate Soldiers and Sailors, residents of Alabama, who from wounds or other cause, are now unable to earn a livelihood, and for the Widows of such as were killed or died in said war, and not since remarried. Application For Relief of Widows of Confederate Soldiers or Sailors, under Act approved February 13, 1891. The State of Alabama, County of Chambers Personally appeared before me, Lloyd Robertson, Judge of Probate in and for said County, Mrs. Mary Willoughby, who, being duly sworn, upon oath, says that her husband, J. T. Willoughby, was a private in company D of 14th Regiment of Ala. Volunteers; that he came to his death from wounds received or disease contracted in the service of the Confederate States, and that his death occurred during the late war or within five years thereafter; that she has not since remarried; that she was a resident of Alabama on the 13th day of February, 1891, and is a resident at the date of this application; and that her taxable property does not exceed four hundred dollars in value. Sworn to and subscribed before me this 30 day of May 1893 Mary (her X mark) Willoughby Lloyd Robertson Judge of Probate of Chambers County. The State of Alabama County of Chambers I hereby certify that satisfactory proof has been made before me of the truth of the allegations set forth in the above affidavit, and that I believe Mrs. Mary Willoughby is entitled to relief under the Act approved February 13th, 1891, and that the duplicate of the foregoing application and affidavit is on file in my office. END Notes: James Thomas Willoughby, Sr., died 6 September 1862 from disease contracted while serving as a private in Company D of the 14th Regiment of the Alabama Volunteers. James and his wife Mary Ann (nee Bishop) Willoughby had three sons, William J. (born 1859), William Ira (born 28 January 1860) who married Mary Alice Fant, and James Thomas Willoughby, Jr., (born 24 August 1861).
