"The LaFayette Sun" - August 23, 1916:

Uncle Joe Brooks.

Returning from church last evening we were informed of the death of this 
good man, and received a request for us to conduct the funeral services at 
Mount Pisgah Church today. But not being able to attend and serve the family 
as requested, we feel a desire to write these few lines to the memory of our 
dear Brother. I suppose Brother Brooks was about 65 years old. He leaves two 
sons and two daughters to follow where he has gone in some future day. His 
wife preceded him to the grave several years ago. He was for many years a 
member of the Mount Pisgah Church and though in great afflictions, by the 
kind assistance of his faithful sons, attended the last meeting held at his 
church. He was a great lover of the public services held at our meetings, 
and often we have seen his eyes flow with tears as he listened to the songs 
and sermons delivered there. Long and trying has been his late affliction, 
but he is now at rest and we firmly believe that he was one of the redeemed 
of the Lord. During this last affliction, which has been for many months, 
his children have proven themselves most faithful and by day and by night 
have kept close watch by his bedside, ministering unto him in every way they 
could. We wish to say to his children, that for such faithfulness there 
awaits you a liberal reward. The last time I saw him he sat upright in the 
meeting house, but today he will be carried into the same building and in 
his casket laid, and we will see him no more in this world......May God 
bless those who morn for him is our prayer.
