Quite a large crowd attended the funeral, attesting the popularity of this good citizen. We extend sympathy to the wife and family. ************************************************ "The Roanoke Leader" - November 17, 1909: Mr. Higgins Dead. Mr. John T. Higgins died last Friday at his home near Five Points, after a protracted illness and was buried at the family cemetery, in the presence of a large outpouring of friends. He was a widely known and highly esteemed citizen. ************************************************ "The LaFayette Sun" - November 24, 1909: In Memory of Jno. T. Higgins. The passing away of the late Jno. T. Higgins adds innumerable sorrows to the many friends and relatives of this distinguished man. For five long weeks, the valiant soldier battled with the dreaded disease, typhoid fever, when on Friday, Nov. 21, 1909, the King of Terrors triumphed over his mortal body and quietly, but steadfastly bore his spirit to the realms above, the place, which to him had been a life long pursuit. The deceased was fifty-four years of age. In every walk of life success seemed to crown every effort. Having gained a vast estate, together with the confidence and admiration of every one, both near and far, the question arises – life, what is life? To him life was full of meaning. His death epitomizes the life of an active many. Busy, energetic, enthusiastic – these words permeate his very being, actuating him in every phase of life. His whole career is volumed with good deeds. His ambition was for the welfare of his fellow man. His aspirations have ever been towards the higher life. As a book his life is now closed. We can look back on the life of this man, and there many good untold actions are plainly visible. Is it possible, all is over? Indeed, forever. His earthly career is done. His body was laid to rest in the family cemetery, there to await the final day. His soul is now anchored in Heaven and is receiving the welcome plaudit, "Well done, they good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of the Lord." Peace to his ashes. Mrs. J.
