W. Stallings Mr. J.W. Stallings familiarly known to his many friends in this section as "uncle Jerry," died at his home in this city last Friday morning about 3:00 o'clock after several weeks illness. Mr. Stallings was in his 79th year, and had been a resident of LaFayette for many years. He was a Confederate soldier and served as color bearer for the 13th Alabama Regiment. He was in a number of the great battles of the Civil War, and suffered the loss of one leg in the battle of Sharpsburg, MD., in 1862. Funeral services were held at the home Monday morning at 10:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W.D. Hubbard, pastor of the Baptist Church. Besides the relatives and other friends of the family the following veterans attended the funeral in a body: Messrs. J.B. Barrow, J.G. Andrews, R.F. Gilder, Ruff Moore, Wiley Gilmore, L. S. Schuessler, N.E. Baker, W.W. Towles and D.M. Spence. The remains were interred in the city cemetery. Besides the widow the deceased is survived by four sons and two daughters- Mr. J.R.Stallings, of Brooksville, Miss: Mr. J.O. Stallings, of Soudan, Ark.; Mr. E.E. Stallings of Fairfax; Mr. A.G. Stallings, of LaFayette; Mrs. J.W. Stanfield, of Tallassee; Mrs. Dansy Dixon, of Fairfax. Additional Comments: According to the 1907 Alabama Census of Confederate Soldiers: Jeremiah W. Stallings, present P.O; Lafayette, Ala.; Birth: March 30, 1841 near Roanoke, Randolph County, Ala; Service Record: First entered the service as Pvt. on July 12, 1861 at Wedowee, Ala. in Company "D" 13th Ala. and continued until September 17, 1862.
