P. Greer House & David E. and Lula Greer Denney House First Avenue N.W. (formerly Warren Street) LaFayette, Alabama Samuel Preston Greer (1844-1904) and wife Susan Lavenia Thomason Greer (1847- 1928), came to LaFayette from Union Springs, Alabama in the early 1870s. They soon purchased an old Greek Revival house with acreage west of the courthouse on Warren Street. Greer, a businessman, prospered in LaFayette and about 1875 remodeled his home in a style more fashionable with the times. The house has nine large rooms with eight fireplaces. Walls were made of plaster with excellent woodwork and trim. Obviously this had once been a fine old home of the Greer family. When visited in 1997, the old house was in a state of ruin and decay. Image 1. This architectural rendering shows the front exterior of the Greer House as it most probably looked when built, possibly as early as 1840. Image 2. This ca. 1907 photograph shows the front exterior and yard of the Greer House after being remodeled into a more fashionable Victorian style around 1875. (From the collection of Robert Denney) Image 3. The photographer made this photograph ca. 1944 while standing at the end of the drive on Warren Street. The cook's house can be seen at the left side of the yard. (From the collection of Robert Denney) Image 4. Winter, 1997. The old house has seen better days but still presents a grand profile.
