There was this one grave among the family graves of Homer and Nim Williams that we were not sure of. It was marked with a large and beautiful fieldstone. In fact, my grandfather thought it was the grave if his grandmother, Charlie Holt Williams, but it was actually a generation farther back. I was up at the cemetery late one summer afternoon cutting the grass with my father. I was cutting in our family plot when I could clearly see the name carved on the stone, “F C Davis.” I was amazed. We never knew that there was anything carved on the stone, but there it was, finally visible. The sun was hitting the stone at just the perfect angle to reveal the fading markings. This is a great tip to read a hard to read tomb stone. Visit the cemetery at different times of the day to see if the angle of the sun can help. You can also pour water over the stone. Sometimes that does the trick. Frances was the daughter of Alexander Howard and Louisa Woods Howard. She married Charles W. Holt on March 5, 1854. Charles died in the Civil War. Frances remarried John Davis on February 6, 1866. Frances’ children are Ancy, Charlie Ophelia Holt Williams, Joseph Alexander Holt, Willis Haynes, Theresa “Resie” Belle Horne, Sara Brewer, John Davis, Jr., and Minnie Lee Jones (Charlie Lee Jones mother.) John Davis is buried in an unmarked grave beside this stone. Frances’ daughter, Charlie and Charlie’s husband, Timothy Powell “Babe” Williams, are also buried in unmarked graves beside John Davis.
