FIRST LIEUTENANT. Enlisted in the ARMY AIR CORPS ON OCTOBER 22, 1943. Served with the 359TH FIGHTER GROUP, 8TH AIR FORCE in the EUROPEAN THEATRE. Stationed at THETFORD, EAST ANGLIA, GREAT BRITAIN. Flew the P-51 MUSTANG Fighter in a total of 67 COMBAT AIR MISSIONS. AWARDED the EUROPEAN THEATRE of OPERATIONS RIBBON WITH 4 STARS, 2 DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS MEDALS, 7 AIR MEDALS PLUS THE PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION OF THE 359TH FIGHTER GROUP. DISCHARGED IN LATE 1945. Additional Comments: Emory Glover Johnson was the only known native of Cherokee County Alabama to have become a Fighter Pilot during World War II. He was born in Centre. After the war he established a general aviation business in Cherokee County and became an agricultural crop duster.
