Savage lay dead, on an operating table, in his residence here. Judge Savage was seized with violent paroxysms of the stomach Tuesday night. Surgeons were preparing to operate at 10:20, on Wednesday night, September 20, 1922, when an attendant nurse discerned that he did not need the surgeon's knife but instead the sexton's spade and shovel. Death crept in just after administration of ether, and as the operator was reaching for his knives. Judge Savage had really been faltering in health for a year or more, and had some minor surgical operations performed last winter, but firm and rugged as his physique had been Nature at last yielded to the Inevitable. Family devotion and friends' affection alike reeled back in dismay when the grim Reaper beconed [sic]. Funeral arrangements had not been completed at this writing, (Thursday morning,) though we understand that the funeral is to occur today, Friday, at 3:00 p.m. Active pall bearers are: C.H. Sims, C.P. Ward, Jr., Geo. E. Lumpkin, Joe W. Baker, T.M. Haney, W.D. Clifton, J. Will Stinson, M.D. Starling. (The list of honorary pall bearers embraces about 45 other names). He was a member of Centre Methodist Church.
