Maddux. The following obituary notice of Mr. M. W. Maddux appeared in a recent issue of the Alabama Christian Advocate: Hon. M.W. Maddux was born March 6, 1829; died in Cherokee county, Ala., June 19, 1899. He was twice married. The first time to Miss E. Weems, the last time to Miss Fannie Cocke. He leaves six children, all grown, one the wife of Rev. J.W. Norton. He embraced religion and joined the Methodist church in early manhood, and was consistent and useful until his death. He served many years as steward, and in him his pastor found a fast friend. He was not quick in coming to a conclusion, but when his opinion was formed, he was decided. In politics and religion he had convictions, and stood by them, but he was not an extremist, and would always listen to reason, and when convinced would change his position accordingly. Eminently conservative he was sometimes thought to obstruct, but no man was more ready to go forward when satisfied of the right way. While having convictions and standing firmly by them he accorded to others the same right and could clasp the hand as a brother while stoutly opposing policy. In August 1898, he was elected to the legislature from Calhoun county, and served faithfully in his place. His last illness was short, but death found him ready, and the good man went to his rest.
