He was educated in the public and high schools of Gaylesville and studied law in office of Honorable John L. Burnett of Gadsden, Alabama. Admitted to Alabama bar 1887 and practiced there until 1893. At that time, he came to Colorado and entered mining, stock and brokerage business, at Cripple Creek. In 1896 lost entire property by fire. He helped to rebuild the town and then worked for a while for his brother-in-law, George Canant. In April 1897, he left Cripple Creek Colorado with two friends to seek a new location. Arriving in the Blue Mountains in Utah, they flipped a coin as to whether their destination should be Idaho or Arizona. Heads, which was Arizona, won the day, and he went to Flagstaff, Arizona and began as common laborer. In 1899, reentered practice of law at Williams, Arizona, and was city attorney 1900. He moved to Tombstone 1902. He was District attorney, Cochise county 1903- 04. He was a Delegate, Arizona Constitutional Convention in 1910. He was Associate Justice, Supreme Court of Arizona, 1911-20 (Chief Justice 1919-20). Resumed practice at Willcox, Arizona with legal dept., Industrial Commission of Arizona. March 10, 1904, he married Mrs. Louise (Cornelius) Leavenworth of Tombstone, Arizona. He was a Democrat in his political views. Office located, Willcox, Arizona.
