KNOX, the famous lawyer of Clinton, Chilton county, was born in Montgomery, Ala., July 23, 1845, and was educated in the private schools of that city, taught by William H. Wilkinson and Prof. R. H. Ford. Leaving school at the age of sixteen, he entered the Central bank of Alabama in Montgomery as clerk, and remained there a year, and then entered the Confederate service, enlisting in the Washington artillery of New Orleans, and served as a private until November, 1864, when he was promoted to be a cadet in the regular Confederate army, and served as such until the war closed. He was in many battles and was wounded slightly once. After the war he returned to his home in Montgomery, Ala., and commenced to study law, and in 1870, was admitted to the bar; he practiced in Montgomery, until 1881, and then moved to Clanton, Ala., where he has since resided and practiced with flattering success. He was elected alderman of Montgomery in 1870, and in 1871 was elected to the legislature from Montgomery county; in 1872 he was elected solicitor of Montgomery county and served as such four years; in 1875 he was elected a member of the constitutional convention, and in 1876 was elected to the state senate from Montgomery. In 1877 he was appointed United States consul to Hamilton, Ontario by President Hayes, and held that office one year, when he returned to Montgomery, Ala. Mr. Knox was a delegate to the republican convention held in Cincinnati in 1876, which nominated Hayes.
