The death of Dr. J. Alex Moore occurred in a Birmingham hospital early Tuesday 
morning following a brief illness. A native of Chilton County, Dr. Moore spent 
a great many years in Jasper and Walker County and from an educational 
standpoint he was truly one of Walker County's greatest benefactors. As 
principal of the Walker County High School from 1912 until 1922 and 
subsequently as county superintendent of education for twelve years, he 
established high schools and promoted the building of more and better schools 
throughout the county. One of his outstanding achievements in Walker was the 
founding of the Walker County Library at Jasper, one of the finest libraries in 
the state, which is free to all the people of Walker County. He worked on the 
project alone, secured funds here and there, and fortunately, he lived to see 
this library one of the finest in the state, with approximately 30,000 volumes 
of selected books. 

Funeral services in charge of Rev. Foster Gamble, editor of the Alabama 
Christian Advocate, assisted by Rev. T. L. McDonald, Rev. John Miller Shores 
and Rev. Person, of Montevallo, were held at the First Methodist Church on 
Wednesday at 11 a.m. and interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery. There were many 
beautiful floral offerings. Active pall bearers were John M. Gray, C. L. 
Burton, J. L. Morris, T. R. Simmons, R. O. Cranford, R. A. Cain, Murray Stovall 
and Schley O'Rear.  Honorary pall bearers were Dr. T. Bridges, Montevallo; F. 
W. Rogan, Montevallo; Judge L. H. Reynolds, Clanton; James Nicol, Carbon Hill; 
Dr. H. G. Dowling, Tuscaloosa; Dr. R. F. Tidwell, Unviersity; G. S. Smith, 
Vernon; Frank Harvell, Talladega; Dr. Edgar Givhan, Birmingham; Dr. A. B. 
Harrish, Birmingham; Dr. J. N. Mason, Birmingham; Tom C. Garber, Birmingham and 
Walter Will Bankhead, Jasper; members of the Jasper Rotary club; Brotherhood 
Class of First Methodist Church. Walker County Library Board; Montevallo Civic 
Club and stewards of Montevallo First Methodist Church. 

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Haley Moore; three brothers, Sam C. 
Moore, Montevallo; Dr. Cliff Moore, Rome, Ga; and Dr. Cary Moore, Talladega; 
four sisters, Mrs. Linda Sessions, Mrs. W. W. Randall and Mrs. Joe W. Bailey, 
Birmingham and Miss Mary Moore, Montevallo. 

Dr. Moore was a devout Christian gentleman, a member of the First Methodist 
Church and a Mason. In 1924 the University of Alabama bestowed upon him a 
degree of Doctor of Law. For nine years he was a member of the faculty of 
Alabama College. He served as President of Oklahoma State College before coming 
to Jasper in 1912. His wife was Miss Elizabeth ‘Bessie' Haley, daughter of Dr. 
and Mrs. J. F. Haley of Jasper.
