Giles Dies Another prominent Wayne Countian, John Givens Giles Sr., was claimed by death Thursday at the age of 81. He was a native of Choctaw County, Ala., coming to Waynesboro in 1927 and has had a long career in public service beginning in 1933 when he was elected to the office of Town Marshall, a position he held for 27 years. Giles then served for two years as Chief of Police, then as City Tax Collector, Tax Assessor, and Street and Water Commissioner. Following his retirement in 1961, he served 12 years on the Board of Alderman. He has served as a member of the Lions Club, a Colonel of Gov. Bill Waller's staff, was a Mason in the H. S. Stansel Lodge, a member of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Association and the Mississippi Municipal Association. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Friday at 3pm from Freeman Chapel with his pastor, the Rev. Jimmy Hodges officiating. Interment was in Waynesboro Cemetery. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Della Jenkins Giles; two sons, Foye and John Giles Jr., both of Waynesboro; one daughter, Mrs. Christine Hicks, also of Waynesboro; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
