In response to a written inquiry as to these brave pioneers, W. H. Griffin, of Campelle, says as follows: "The two Griffins who were killed in the Bashi skirmish were brothers, and one of them was my grandfather's father. He was killed when my grandfather was a baby. It was three miles this side of Wood's Bluff, on the Bigbee river. The last time they were seen the Indians had killed one of them and the other was on his knees shooting at them, and that was the last ever seen or heard of them. My grandfather was William Griffin. He married a Miss Drinkard and had three children, two boys and one girl. My father was the oldest, and his name was Ivy Thomas Griffin. The next was a sister, who married twice. She had one child by her first marriage, who married Door White, of Thomasville, and she had two sons by her last marriage - J. W. Reid, of Campelle, and J. T. Reid, of Opine. The third child was John Griffin, who lived nearly all his life near Bashi and Choctaw Corner. He married a Miss Dunning, of Dixon's Mills, and they had a large family. My father married a Miss Holland, and they had seventeen children. Most of them are dead. Our oldest brother, T. W. Griffin, died in Thomasville about three years ago. There are four brothers living-William Griffin, J. G. Griffin, F. F. Griffin and A. B. Griffin, and one sister, Mrs. J. B. White, of Aliceville, Ala." The next conflict that occurred between the whites and the Indians took place in the northern part of the county, near Bashi, called the "Bashi Skirmish," which we also take from Pickett's History, and is as follows: Additional Comments: Extracted from: HISTORY OF CLARKE COUNTY BY JOHN SIMPSON GRAHAM Press of BIRMINGHAM PRINTING COMPANY Birmingham, Ala. 1923 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/clarke/history/1923/historyo/griffins93gms.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
