Joiner Carey Baptist Association Churches in Clay County Alabama 1890-1892 Carey Baptist Association,which convened with Pole Bridge on Friday before the third Lord's Day in August 1890. The introductory sermon was preached by Bro. J. A. Shadix, Jr., from the 12th chapter of Romans and first verse. After an intermission of one hour the ministers and messengers met in the house and after Singing, and prayer by Rev. H. Ingram, J.D. Rainwaters called the house to order and proceeded to business. Bro. J. A. Shadix acting as moderator called for letters from the different churches, which were read by J. D, Rainwaters and Henry Linton. Then went into choice of officers which resulted in the election of J. D. Rainwater moderator, and Henry Linton clerk. Enrollment names of messengers as follows: Liberty: D. L. Riley and J. C. Riley. Liberty Hill: J. L. Kirkpatrick and G.T. Green. Ashland: Paul Burns and J. H. Nail. Antioch: J. W. Sewell, A.J. Dison ana W. P. Webber. Union Hill: H. Linton, J. P. Williams, D. A. Whitted and W. A. Balkom Friendship: L. A. Grogan and L. M. Horn. Pole Bridge: G. L. Griffin, J. N. Parsons and W.D. Parsons. Hatchett Creek: H. Ingram and J. W. Ponder. Spring Hill, Mt. Lebanon and Bethel not represented. Called for correspondence. Appointed a committee composed of H. Ingram, J. W. Sewell and the messengers from Pole Bridge church on preaching, and on queries John Parsons, J. H. Nail and G.L. Griffin. Called for standing committee on queries. They report four queries for discussion. On motion, the first, was, taken up, which reads thus: Do we as Baptist Churches now conform to Apostolic practice? After discussion by Paul Burns, W. H. Johnston and J. A. Shadix adopted answer: "We do not as we should". The second query was then taken un: Should we use helps in the study of the scripture? Intermission by Paul Burns, A.R. Whitted and J. A. Shaddix. Answer, We should use the helps. The stand was occupied Friday night by G.C. Reid and Paul Burns. Saturday met at 8 o'clock and spent ono hour in prayer, then resumed the regular order of business. The third query was then taken up: According to the scriptures is the way to Heaven narrow? Discussed by J. H. Nail, A. R. Whitted, H. Ingram and J. A. Shadix. Answer, "The road to Heaven is narrow." The preaching committee report Rev. W. H. Johnston to preach at 11 o'clock. After a refreshment of one-hour the messengers reassembled in the house and took up the fourth query: If a member of the church violates the laws of God, or the rules of the church publicly, is it proper for the church to require them to acknowledge to the church publicly?" After discussion answer given, "They should. Again, call for committee on queries. They report three queries for discussion at the next meeting of the body. The questions are: "Have we scriptures to. hear an acknowledgment for drunkenness?" As a member of the right to transact business for the church and hold a letter of dismission over twelve months. Appointed G.C. Reid and H. Ingram as correspondents to the second district, J.D. Rainwater and J.P. Williams to the 4th. Located the next session of the Carey Baptist Association of 1891 with the Hatchett Creek. The next meeting of the first district will be held at Ashland in 1891. Preaching Committee reported bro W.H. Johnston to Preach at night., and bro J.A. Shaddix 11 o'clock the next day. The congregation was very large and attentive. After preaching on Sunday the brethren took the parting hand and good feelings prevailed. Thus ended a harmonious meeting. J.D.
