In 1891 W.D. Tidwell and J.L. Edwards gave the land for the church and cemetery. The church had 27 members. The church was named after the Motley community. Dr. Joseph P. Motley moved to the area and opened a general store and a cotton gin. There was later a Post office in his general store. There was also a school in the area and a few other businesses. Dr. Motley died in 1919 in a car accident. He is buried in Daviston, Tallapoosa, County AL. In 1892 Rev. R.M. Allen was the pastor and J.S. Stephens was the church clerk. A letter from Union Church was read and received, Union Baptist Church was admitted to the Carey Baptist Assocation. The church had 29 members. Union Baptist church hosted her first Carey Baptist Assocation in 1909. The first church building was erected in the early to mid 1890's. Whatley 11 o'clock a.m. Preaching by W. T. Davis. 2 o'clock p.m. subject- Washing the Saints feet by J. A. Dunn, W. H. Preston and J. R. Stodghill. Preaching at night by M. A. Johnson. Sunday 9 o'clock a.m. Sunday School and address by J. A. Dunn and others. 11 a.m. Preaching by H.C. Knight. T.B. Fargason, for Committee.
