Ashland, Clay County, Alabama. The first log church is said to have been called "Salem" and was erected in the mid-1870's. It is unknown when the name of the church was changed, but newspaper articles written as early 1886 state the name "Lystra". By the early 1890's a new church was erected. By 1914 a third church building was erected. In 1891 Lystra Baptist Church was a member of the Carey Baptist Association. In 1895 the church had 95 members. Early Pastors: John N. Moore W.M. Surnames of early members: Bass Burns Carr Dean Gillam Hallman Gaither Lowe McDaniel McMath Morris Nappier Robertson Runyan Shaddix Smith Stewart Suggs Tinney Ashland Progress 1914: A large crowd of churchgoers went out to Lystra Sunday to attend the dedication of the splendid new Baptist church at that place. They report a fine service, large but orderly crowd, a good dinner and a very enjoyable day. The good citizenship of the Lystra community have just reason to be proud of the progress they are making in community development. Ashland Progress 1915: The church at Lystra made some improvements on the building last week, built a stove flue and put in two nice new heaters. Homecoming is the 2nd Sunday in July.
