Neither Cleburne nor Clay County officials knew what led to the shooting, but stated they were looking for Dennis for questioning. The affair took place about dark Saturday night. It was said Sheriff Will Owen of Cleburne County had not been to the scene of the shooting late Saturday night. At the hospital, Campbell's injury was termed critical, but he was still alive early Sunday morning little hope was held for his recovery.
