There is general rejoicing in the town on account of the starting of work on the Birmingham and Lineville railroad which la being built by well-known Birmingham gentleman and which will open up the rich agricultural and mineral resource of Clay County. A short ceremony marked the beginning of work in the presence of a huge gathering of Lineville citizens, the resident officers of the railroad and Ihe engineers, who have made the survey and who will superintend the construction, Col. John S. Jemison. vice president and general manager, presented with a speech suitable to the creation a shovel to Miss Alma Bell, one of Lineville's most popular young ladles, to throw the first dirt. A large force of men and team immediately afterward began the clearing of the roadbed and the moving of material. The shovel was presented afterward to Miss Bell and bears the following inscription: "This shovel presented to Miss Alma Bell by the official of the Birmingham and Lineville Railroad Company as a memento of December 14, 1903, on which day her fair hands threw the first shovel of dirt on the road at Lineville. Ala." "The officers and directors of the company are: R. H. Pearson, president: John S. Jemison, vice- president and general manager; R L. Ivey, secretary and treasurer; Vasser L. Allen, counsel; Robert Jemison, S E. Thompson, W, J. Powell, Sr., director. Wilson & Alber, chief engineers; H. A. Jones, resident engineer".
