Lineville Headlight January 31, 1913
The Grand Jury of the County Court of Clay made a partial report last Saturday 
and took a recess until Monday, February 10. Forty indictments were turned into 
court by the inquisitorial body, two of which were for capital cases. 

John Eilis, colored, was indicted on a charge of murder in the first degree and 
his case is set for trial on Friday, January 31st. He was arrested several weeks 
ago on the charge of murdering a negro woman; near Brownville, whose body was 
found in Hatchett Creek. 

Clay Pepper, a young white man, who is a member of a prominent Millerville 
family, was indicted on a serious charge. He was arrested in Texas and, Sheriff 
Mayo left Tuesday to bring him back to Clay County for trial. 

This week has been devoted to the trial of misdemeanor cases in the County 
Court. Quite a number of verdicts of not guilty have been returned by the 
juries. Jury criminal cases will also be on trial next week.

Ashland Progress: Feb 7, 1913:
The jury in the case of John Ellis, the negro who was put on trial for murder in 
the County court last Friday, returned a verdict of guilty and fixed the 
punishment at life imprisonment. The court immediately passed the sentence. 
Quite a large number of misdemeanor cases have been disposed of this week, the 
court working overtime in many instances ha order to dispatch business.

Clay Pepper was convicted of Rape and sent to prison.
