Bicycle Officer Stanley rode past the deserted cottage on his wheel and on the front steps and stopped. "What is it ma'am," he asked, "are you in trouble?" It was apathetic, poverty-stricken little group the young mother and her little ones. "No, she said "I'm waiting for my husband, he has gone down into the city to mail some letters". "Who is he" asked the officer. "His name's Turner". "We're on our way from our old home in Cherokee County, S.C., to Clay County Ala., where my people live". A little pushcart in which were a few poor belongings was all they had. In this the little ones rode, and mother and father tramped afoot over the rough roads taking turn about pushing the little cart.
