L. McCollum and the negro were both shot, the negro perhaps fatally. Mr. McCollum received two or three shots in the breast, one shot making a rather deep flesh wound and coming out under the arm, his other wounds are less severe, and his condition is not considered serious. The negro was shot twice one shot entering his body just above the heart and, passing out beneath his shoulder. He was brought on to the county jail, but the attending physician don't expect him to survive. The shooting occurred at the home of R. R. Whatley where the negro, who was wanted on a charge of theft in Randolph County, had been at work. He had been away a few days, however, and in the meantime is said to have escaped from officers who attempted to hold him at Wadley, taking an officer's gun away from him. It was expected that he would return to the Whatley home for his clothes and Sheriff Phillips's force had been asked to aid in intercepting him. Deputies McCollum and Browning were on the scene last night when he came, and, after he had gone into his room to get his belongings they entered, McCollum in the lead, and asked him to put up his hands. He immediately opened fire on them, and they returned the fire with results as stated above. Additional Comments: James Trammell was convicted and sent to prison in Oct-1932.
