V. Carlton, who returned last night from Ashland, Clay County, reports a serious conflagration in that city in the early hours of Tuesday morning, which destroyed about one-fourth of the south side of the public square. Three business houses were consumed and a fourth one demolished to prevent the spread of the fire. The extent of the loss is not known, nor is the amount of the insurance carried on the buildings or stocks in the burnt district. Lineville Headlight May 17, 1907: On last Monday night about midnight fire visited our neighboring town, Ashland, for the second time within the last three months The first fire burned. four wooden structures, on the south side of the square, and the fire last Monday night burned seven wooden building on the east side of the square, being all the business houses on the east side of the square. The fire originated in the grocery store occupied by Dan Kirk on the south-east corner of the block and is thought to have been the work of an incendiary as there was no fire in any of the buildings during the day. The loss is estimated at about $7500 which was partially covered by insurance.
