Ashland Progress May 2, 1940
Sheriff Z. P. Jordan and Deputies P. M. Williamson, A. T. Mitchell and S. W. 
Brooks, brought in last Monday afternoon what might be termed a "whole passel" 
of stills five in number. They were also accompanied to town by Troy Luker, 
white, who was said to be at the still site, and two negroes, J. T. and Willie 
Summerlin, who the officers connected with the operation of the outfit The 
stills were located in a hollow about 2 miles northeast of Barfield, and all 
five stills were within radius of one-fourth mile of each other. The stills were 
estimated to hold between 1200 and 1500 gallons of beer and were made of copper. 
A quantity of mash and other apparatus were destroyed, and the stills and one 
"worm" were brought to town, the stills being exhibited on the courthouse 
square. Sheriff Jordan says that he carried along one of his bloodhound puppies, 
which tracked down a bottle of whiskey and a jug of homebrew hid in the bushes 
near the home of the negroes arrested. This was the largest single haul made by 
the officers in sometime, and the capacity of the still would no doubt be able 
to put lots of "life" or possibly death in the primary to be held next Tuesday.
