Deputy Bert Robinson had gone in the jail to supply the prisoners with coal and water, when suddenly they sprang upon him, commanded silence, and proceeded to gag him with strips torn from their blankets. After he was thoroughly gagged and tied, they (the four negroes) escaped. Mr. Robinson soon freed himself sufficiently to get out and give the alarm. The negroes who escaped were Judge Hendrix, Sam Calhoun, Douglas Shealy and Sam Hosken. One of the number, Sam Calhoun, was caught and again lodged in jail.
