The Birmingham News July 20, 1899
A determined search is being made in this part of the State for a negro named 
Jesse Bryant, who, it is said, committed a criminal assault on Mrs. Hannah, of 
Clay County, last Monday. The people of Lineville and vicinity had him surrounded 
in a swamp, but a severe hailstorm came up causing them to abandon the chase 
temporarily. In the meantime, he escaped. Sheriff Glover arrested a negro here 
today for Bryant, but he proved to be the wrong man.
