The Gadsden Times-News December 27, 1901
Residing at Millerville, in Clay County, with her grandson, W. J. C. Monroe is 
one of the State's oldest citizens, Mrs. L. W. Beard, who is ninety-six years 
old. Mrs. Beard is a native of South Carolina, but removed to Clay County, 
fifty-one years ago, where she has since resided. She is remarkably well 
preserved and takes an interest in the affairs of the day. Her food is of the 
simplest, and no one can prevail on her to eat anything which she calls "fancy 
cooking." For breakfast she eats three biscuits, with some butter and molasses, 
and a cup of coffee. Her noon meal consists of a small quantity of vegetables, a 
piece of meat, bread and molasses; and for supper she eats a piece of corn bread 
and drinks a glass of milk. She retires early and her sleep is unbroken. Mrs. 
Beard has smoked a pipe since she was sixteen years old, though at all times in 
moderation, never becoming a slave to the habit. She has living children, 
grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Monroe's 
mother also resides with him. She is seventy-two years old and is in splendid 
health.
