Throwing two of her five children into 15 feet of water at the bottom of a well at her home eight miles west of here, Mrs. C. S. Price, widow, leaped after them to death Friday night, according to Coroner Stokeley Corley. A coroner's jury Saturday morning returned a verdict of murder and suicide. The children who went to death with their mother were Betty Ruth, 4, and Douglas, 6. All three bodies were recovered from the well Saturday morning. Before throwing the children into the well, Coroner Corley said, Mrs. Price sent two older children, Howard, 14, and Mildred, 12, for her brother, Albert Conger, who lives a half mile from her home, instructing them to tell her brother "To come at once." Another child, John Conger Price, 18 months old, was left alone in the bedroom of her home. Conger, on arriving and finding the baby alone in the house, started searching for his sister and her two missing children. The clue that led to discovery of the tragedy was the fact that the cover to the well was missing. Howard and Mildred Price told investigators that as they left the house about 7:30 p.m. to go to their uncle's their mother fell in the floor weeping. A neighbor, Ellis Blackman, passed the house about 8 p.m. and heard a child scream. He went on without investigating. The night before the tragedy Mrs. Price had stayed at the home of her sister, Mrs. J. D. Ward, who said Mrs. Price seemed to be in a disturbed condition. Friday afternoon Mrs. Price had visited a neighbor, Lee Jones, who was seriously ill. coroner Corley said the woman read the Bible and "preached" to the sick man. The bodies of the three victims were brought back to Liberty Hill Methodist church, three miles south of Ashland, for burial last Saturday afternoon. The two children, Douglas, age 6, and Bettie Ruth, age 4, were buried in the same casket. Mrs. Price was buried beside her husband who died about a year ago.
