Love same in today with four moonshiners from Clay County. The officers report a desperate state of affairs in Clay. A few days ago, a dastardly attempt was made to murder Allen Rigsby, who had been a witness in several cases against moonshiners at the present term of the federal court. He lived on Red Mountain, in Clay County and a few days ago he was fired upon at nightfall by an unknown party in ambush. He was struck with several buckshot in his arm and body. His arm was broken and his physicians fear that it will have to be amputated. His wounds are desperate and may prove fatal. The revenue officers report that the fruit crop in the upper counties is abundant this year and that the moonshiners are killing an intimidating witness so that they can have a big run in the illicit distilleries. Rigsby's house and contents were burned by incendiaries last winter and his life had been frequently threatened by moonshiners who charged him with being a spy and informer.
