P. Haynes. Mr. Haynes stated that the Rev. James Shaddix, the pioneer preacher, between the years 1840 and 1880 "wore a path across the mountain. In his 12-mile hikes from his home in the Shinbone Valley section of Clay County to the Salt Creek Church, now standing at the same place". Residents of the Shinbone and Salt Creek sections know where the ends of the path are, according to Mr. Haynes. In many places cross the mountain the trail is said still to be visible. Further Information was asked by Mr. Haynes on the life and work of the preacher, who is believed to have died about 1900. At the time of death, the Rev. Mr. Shaddix was said to have been blind, after giving the larger part of his life to the ministry. His evangelistic work was done without pay, it was said, while he made a living on farm. Mr. Haynes asked that those having information on the life of Mr. Shaddix or his path over the mountain communicate with him.
