Lihu Smith of Ashland quietly celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary here last week. The elderly couple was married Jan. 21, 1893 by John Miller. Both Mr. and Mrs. Smith are natives of this area and have lived in their present home for the past 38 years. They have lived within, a four-mile radius of Ashland their entire life and were neighbors before their marriage. Mr. Smith is 84 and Mrs. Smith is 80. Mrs. Smith is able to do most of the housework and cooking though their children visit them daily to Mr. Smith is confined to his bed most of the time but is able to sit in a rocking chair near his bed for short periods of time. Mr. Smith registered to vote soon after his 21st birthday 63 years ago and has voted in each election since that time. Mr. Smith's son assisted his father to the polls to vote for the President of the United States in the last election. He has not missed the privilege of voting for a president of the United States, or any other election held in Clay County during the past 63 years. Neither has Mrs. Smith missed an opportunity to vote since women were allowed that privilege, in 1920. Mr. and Mrs. Smith's oldest son Harvel, died during World War of pneumonia while serving in the Army. They have seven other children. They are Mrs. O. E. Wood, Mrs. E. D. Riley Ashland, Mrs. J. T. Deason, Columbus, Ga., Mrs. Dee Hanson, Sheffield, Mrs. Tom Parsons, Ashland, Mrs. J. A. Fain, Albany Ga., and one son Ledford Smith, postmaster in Ashland. They have 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have watched Ashland grow from three wooden store buildings to its present size. They can remember when Ashland had only a small amount of wooden dwellings as compared to its present hundreds of bricks and wooden dwelling houses. They are very pleased to set the construction of manufacturing plants come to Ashland and that progress of the town as well as for all of Clay County. Mrs. Smith is well physically and is able to help look after Mr. Smith who is in bed most of the time now. She was able to attend church with her son recently. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have been active in church during lifetime. Mr. Smith has attended church regularly at Lystra Baptist Church and Mrs. Smith at the Church of Christ where she has been a member for many years. Mr. Smith built the first house they owned before their marriage where they lived on farm for many years Ashland. Mr. Smith was actively engaged in fanning until a few years ago. They continued to keep chickens and a cow until recent months.
