Anniston Star January 15, 1942
The deaths of Myrtle Lee Smith. 13. and C. B. Smith, 27, today were listed as 
murder and suicide by Clay County authorities. Chief Deputy S.W. Brooks said 
Smith, inducted into the army last April, fatally wounded the girl with a shotgun 
yesterday and shortly afterward shot himself to death. They were third cousins. 
Brooks said the girl was shot near the Lystra community, three miles from here, 
and that Smith went into a nearby swamp before killing himself. He did not know 
if Smith was on leave from the army.
