Alexander City Outlook January 13, 1956
In observance of their fiftieth wedding anniversary Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Sparks 
repeated their marriage vows in a ceremony it the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Gaines Hodnett. Mrs. Sparks is the former Miss Lee Emma Hassell of Lineville 
where they still make their home. The double ring ceremony was performed by 
Elder B. B. Finley, pastor of the Providence Primitive Baptist Church, before an 
improvised altar of ferns and smilax. Container of greenery and dried 
arrangements were placed at vantage points about the living room. Rebecca 
Burdett five-year-old granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sparks, was the ringbearer, 
carrying the two gold wedding bands on a pillow of gold satin. The ceremony was 
followed by a small reception. The dining room was lovely with arrangements of 
yellow gladioli, chrysanthemums and golden magnolia leaves. Tapers in golden 
candelabra flanked a bowl of small yellow chrysanthemums and gold magnolia 
leaves on the dining table was covered with an exquisite cloth of white satin, 
which featured a fluted edge caught with bows of gold satin. Centering the table 
was a tiered candelabrum holding 50 burning candles. The three-tiered wedding 
cake embossed with gold, was topped by a miniature bride and groom. Cake was 
served by Miss Doneil Jones of Sylacauga, and pouring coffee were Marie 
Thornell, Mrs. Huey Jones of Sylacauga, and Mrs. W. K. McCullough. Mr. and Mrs. 
Sparks are parents of six children, three of whom were able to attend the 
celebration. They also have nine grandchildren.
