Selma News May 9, 1870
A correspondent of the Montgomery Mail, writing from Roanoke, under date of May 
10, gives the following particulars of a diabolical murder committed by one 
Taylor, member of the Legislature from Chambers County. A most brutal and 
fiendish murder was committed in Clay County, near Ashland, on yesterday, in 
which William Taylor was the cowardly actor. This fiend in human form 
misrepresents Chambers County in the Alabama Legislature. Our informant, the 
Rev. Wm. Culpepper, tells us that Taylor had been on a spree for several days, 
and had abused his wife to that extent that she appealed to her brother, who 
resides near Louina, for protection. She requested him to come and carry her to 
his home for a few days, as she could no longer bear her husband's brutalities. 
Her brother went up, but did not take her back with him, in consequence of some 
misunderstanding or failure to make the necessary arrangements for traveling. 
She remained, and things grew from bad to worse until the afternoon of 
yesterday, when they culminated in her death at the hands of him who had 
promised to love, cherish and protect her.  The in human wretch shot her from 
the rear, coward that he was, the ball entering at the back of the head and 
emerging in front his victim living but one hour. It is not known what caused 
him to commit this most diabolical murder. We learn that Taylor moved to his 
present home sometime in the latter part of the winter or the first of the 
spring, his former residence having been at Hickory Flat, Chambers County. Mr. 
C. informed us that he had been arrested.
