Mr. McClary was employed as foreman in a railroad camp near here and was returning to the camp with a negro man and woman who had run away from the camp during the night. It appears that McClary had stopped at Crooked Creek for his horse to drink and the negro man got the drop on him and shot him through the back of the head. H. W. Barfield, a farmer who was picking cotton nearby saw Mr. McClary coming down a hill with the negro man in front, and the negro woman behind, just prior to the shooting. Shortly afterward he heard two pistol shots. He paid no attention to the incident for a while, but not seeing the party pass, he went to investigate and saw the woman fleeing up the road. The negro man made his escape and has not yet been captured. Mr. McClary came to this section from Tennessee and was employed as foreman at R. E. Robinson's railroad camp on the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic railroad. Ashland Progress Sep 27, 1912: Sheriff Mayo together with Deputy Sheriff E.B. Edmondson, of LaGrange, Ga., came in Tuesday night with a negro which is thought to be one John Bailey, alias Charley Williams, who in 1907 killed James McClary, a white man who was employed as a foreman during the construction of the A. B. & A. Ry near Lineville. The negro was lodged in jail at LaGrange several days ago but was not brought here till Monday. An effort is being made to have someone who knew the negro who did the killing to identify him.
