Ashland Progress August 12, 1948
A three-week outbreak of cattle rustling in Clay County was believed solved with 
the arrest of two Talladega men on charges of assault with intent to murder. 
William Cole, 25, 626 Isbell Court, Talladega and Dewey Bob Atkisson, also of 
Talladega, are in jail on charges of assault with intent to murder Woody East 
21, of Bowden Grove community. The shooting took place late Friday afternoon 
near Turnipseed Ranch. East was shot alter he refused to allow Cole and Atkisson 
to put some hogs in his car after their truck had broken down. Cole and Atkisson 
stated they offered to take East to a hospital, but he got in his car anil drove 
off. East was later picked up on the highway by Pink Bunn ana carried to the 
hospital. Cole and Atkisson allegedly found Easts car on the highway, took it 
and drove into Talladega where they were arrested by Talladega County officers. 
East was shot in the head with a 16-gauge shotgun. He was carried to a Talladega 
hospital and was released from the hospital Thursday. Cole and Atkisson claim 
the shooting was an accident. Although Cole, held in Talladega County jail, 
reportedly admits firing the shot, Atkisson is being held in Clay County jail on 
identical charges. Atkisson and Cole reportedly confessed to stealing 17 hogs 
and two cows in the past three weeks. Most of the hogs and cows have been found, 
where they were sold. Two others are being held in the Clay County jail for 
investigation in the case.
