Other white prisoners, who occupied the same set of cells remained to tell the story of how the escape was made and say that when the prisoners were last fed, the lock to the lever box was left unfastened and that one of the escaped jail birds, who had slender limbs, managed to reach through the opening in the cell and throw the lever, thus opening the cell door. This is thought by some to be an incredulous story but seems to be the generally accepted explanation. After getting out of the cell they refastened the cell door and made an opening in the wall through which they escaped, the outer door being locked.
