Both negroes were killed by leaden balls fired from a pistol in the hands of a negro man who resented the idea of another negro man taking his railroad camp wife without first having been divorced. The method of marriage practiced in the railroad camps is rather peculiar. The contractor brings in a number of negro women and says to the negro men: Bill, this one is your wife, Tom, that one is yours. And the ceremony is completed. It appears that the aim of the negro who did the killing was not very accurate. The first negro killed happened to be standing nearby and the ball struck him and killed him instead of the negro shot at; but the next shot brought down the negro first fired upon. These murders among the Negroes in the railroad camps quite numerous.
