Somewhere up there my father was taken prisoner by the Indians and held at the point of seventeen guns during part of the evening and all that night after they were captured. I did not learn definitely the place and have long wished to know more about it. There was a man with him at the time named Philipps, and they too had bought land there together. The lands lay near the home of a mix-breed named Adair, and Adair went with them. He made excuse and left the white men. When they got back without him, they found a number of Indians at his home who seemed to be waiting for them and they were made prisoners at once. The Indians were in a very ugly mood, and believing it a plot, the two white men expected the worst at any time. Adair appeared the next morning and told a plausible story. But whether true or not father never knew. He always had his suspicions of Adair. Now, where did Adair live at that time? He evidently had means, including a few slaves, and was doubtless, a man of some note. Father lived in Henry County at the time and Samuel Young was his name. Others went at that time, but Philipps is the only name I distinctly remember. Perhaps your father was one of them. I take the Journal and appreciate your talks very much. Respectfully, W. A.
