Lineville Headlight
John Lewis Carpenter, 76, has joined the Heavenly host after a well spent life 
among his friends. He lived in the Macedonia community most all his life in 
sight of the church, he and his wife joined about 60 years ago, one year after 
they were married. He remained faithful to his church all these years, being of 
the Primitive Baptist faith. He was born and reared in Clay and at the age of 19 
was married to Miss Mary Jane Hamlin, of Chambers County. She was born the same 
year as her husband and survives. Eleven children came into their home and all 
live except one, Mrs. J. J. Eidson, who has just passed on. They are: Mrs. F. M. 
Pruett, Ashland, Ala. R. Carpenter, Wintergarden, Mrs. J. J. Eidson, deceased; 
J. T. Carpenter, Laurel Hill. E. B. Carpenter, Five Points, Ala; Mrs. C. Smith, 
Lineville. Mrs. R. W. Shaddix, Talladega, Mrs. G. T. House, Birmingham, W. E. 
Carpenter, Lineville, Mrs. John F. Shaddix, Lincoln, R. B. Carpenter, 
Birmingham. Mr. Carpenter was honored twice by the electorate of the county for 
tax collector, making an efficient and reliable officer. At the age of nine he 
was left an orphan and the only dependent of mother and five sisters. His 
pastor, Rev. Shaddix, and Rev. Goodman conducted the funeral and the following: 
Rev Woodward, Rev. Bynum, Hon. John R. McCain, Dr. J. R. Stodghill, Judge E. J. 
Garrison, Judge F. J. Ingram, Rev. W. M. Garrett and H. L. Jackson praised his 
good name in attributes worthy of the great life just closed by this pioneer of 
Clay County.
