Carpenter, 857 of Ashland, Rt. 1, will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Ashland with the Rev. Jack Drinkwater and DeForest Nolan officiating. Burial will be in the Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Brock Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church from 2 to 3 p.m. Mrs. Carpenter died Thursday at Brevard, N.C., after a short illness. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Mary Tinney of Ashland, Mrs. Ruth Brown of Altoona, and Mrs. Opel Merrill of Umatilla; a sister, Mrs. Tula Sparks of Lineville; two brothers, B.L. Gaither and W.T Gaither, both of Ashland; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Carpenter, Ledford Tinney, James Merrill Walter McGlon, Donald Merrill and David Tinney. Mrs. Carpenter was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County. She was a housewife and a member of the First Baptist Church in Ashland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Clay County Rescue Squad.
