Mr. Duke was 74 years of age and had spent a large portion of his life in this county. He was a veteran of the Civil war, a member of the 14th Alabama regiment, and was severely wounded while in active service. He was also captured and held for some time a prisoner of war at Elmira, New York. The deceased was a man of quiet, modest and unassuming, disposition and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was the father of four sons, J. B. Duke, F. H. Duke, W. H. Duke and Brooks Duke who constitute the Duke Bros. Furniture Company with stores in Birmingham and Ashland. Two daughters, Mrs. W, W, McMath and Mrs. Oslin, also survive him. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church, and his remains were laid to rest in the Providence burying ground near his old home. The funeral service was held Saturday morning and was conducted by Elder H. G. Harris. A large number of relatives and friends of the family attended.
