Ashland Progress
A tragedy marked the close of a negro party at the house of Fanny Hostin, a 
negress in the southern part of town Friday night, of which Jasper Garrett was 
the victim. A gun shot in the face and ranging upward earned almost instant 
death, The shooting which proved fatal occurred shortly after midnight although 
other shots signs of carousing were beard some time before. Two negroes, Jim 
Robertson and Tom Hostin were arrested for the offense and placed in jail. Later 
Tom Hostin, who was only regarded as an accomplice was released after a 
preliminary hearing before Justice Miller. Jim Robertson will have a hearing 
tomorrow. All were, well known negroes about town. Garrett was about 20 years of 
age.

Jim Robertson, charged with the murder of Jasper Garrett was convicted of murder 
in the second degree and his punishment was fixed by the jury at 15 years 
imprisonment in the penitentiary.
