On of the largest audience of a like occasion ever assembled. Rev. J. F. Dunn of Ft. Payne, and Rev. G. E. Driskill of Goodwater, former pastors of the church here and close friends of the doctor were called to take part in the funeral service. A large display of flowers spoke the silent words of appreciation from the many friends who knew him. His friends were many, for he had gone to their rescue at any time anywhere and many times without hope of reward. He died suddenly about Monday morning. It was his usual time of arising, and he attempted to this time, but death took him. If he had lived till next Saturday, lie would have been 69 years of age. Dr. Gay came to Lineville from Almond, Ala. about 35 years ago. He had then been a practicing physician seven years or more. He was a fried to suffering humanity regardless of race or station in life. He was a good surgeon, a good citizen and a substantial friend. He was at one time Probate Judge of the county by appointment and served a few months. From the manifestations of the numbers that came, far and rear, he was a friend of man. We can pay no nobler respect. Those surviving are his widow, one son. Dr. Brenton Gay of Atlanta, Mrs. Paul Cheatem, Lynchburg, and Mrs. Harold Andrews, Lineville. The doctors attending as honorary pall bearers were, Drs. Dixon and Washam of Talladega, Gay, Jordan, Owens and Owens of Ashland, Denny of Wadley, C. P. Gay of Geneva, Barfield and Stephens of Lineville. Active pallbearers were C. B. Crisler, W. E. Carpenter, O. D. Seymour, O.B. Yates, A. E. Enberg and John H. Ingram, Jr. Interment was in the new cemetery, Blair in charge. Ashland Progress: Dr. Stonewall J. Gay, prominent citizen and physician died Monday morning at his home in Lineville. His death occurred in the early morning hours. Nothing unusual in his condition was discovered by his family until about the customary time for him to rise. He was then in a dying condition and breathed only a few minutes. He is said to have suffered from heart trouble for quite a while, but notwithstanding his precarious condition he continued to practice his profession and had gone about his usual duties the day before his death. Dr. Gay was 69 years of age and had been a citizen of Clay County at least half of his life. While most of his time and talent was devoted to the medical profession in which he ranked high, he always took an active interest in business, civic, and political affairs. He was appointed Judge of Probate of Clay County in 1903 to fill a vacancy and served efficiently in that capacity until the term expired at the end of 1904. In his passing the county loses one of its outstanding citizens, one whose influence had long been felt and recognized. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lineville Methodist church of which the deceased was for many years a leading member. The service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. L.M. Harris. A number of former pastors who had known Dr. Gay through the years were also present and took part in the service. A very large congregation was present among whom were many relatives and a host of friends. Dr. is survived by his widow, one son, Dr, Brenton Gay, of Atlanta, ana two daughters, Mrs. Paul Cheatam of Lynchburg, and Mrs. Harold S. Andrews, of Lineville. The interment was in the Lineville city cemetery.
