Ashland Progress
Bryant Giles who was hurt during a series of disturbances in Ashland on a 
Saturday night of the recent county fair, died at an early hour Tuesday morning 
in Atlanta where he was carried for treatment Sunday. It is alleged that he was 
struck on the head with a pistol inflicting a severe wound. He appeared to 
improve for a while but on account of serious symptoms in his case the trip to 
Atlanta to consult specialists was decided upon a few days ago.  The remains 
were returned funeral services were held Wednesday morning interment was made 
the Lineville cemetery. He leaves a wife and two children.

Dec 17, 1919, Our Mountain Home:
Jim White, who was charged with the killing of Bryant Giles, was tried in the 
circuit court here this week, charged with murder in the first degree. The jury 
gave a verdict Wednesday it being manslaughter in the first degree and penalty 
fixed at five years in the penitentiary. White struck Giles in the head with a 
pistol causing concussion from which he died about six weeks later in Atlanta, 
where he had been carried for treatment. White's attorneys will appeal the case 
to the supreme court.
