Ashland Progress
Final rites for Leathie Viola Gay Gortney, 67, were held at 2 o'clock on Nov. 1 
at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Grady Harris, Rev. Grady Birchfield, Rev. 
Elmer Wheeles and Rev. Ford Taylor officiating. Interment was in adjoining 
cemetery with Blair Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were grandsons: Joe 
Bruce Gortney, Merrell Gortney, Larry Gortney, Paul Gortney, Bobby Joe Gortney 
and Billy Denney. Mrs. Gortney passed away at her home on Oct. 31, after a short 
illness. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Methodist Church. Survivors include her 
husband, Joe Gortney; six sons, William and Gary of Cragford; Lois, Alfred, Hoyt 
of Ashland; Walt of Anniston; two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Denney, Mrs. Millie 
Denney of Ashland; her mother, Mrs. Frank Gortney; five brothers, Johnnie Gay, 
Wm. Gay, Howard Gay, Anniston, Walter Gay, So. Car., Herman Gay, Bham, a half-
brother, Clarence Gortney; three half-sisters, Mrs. Billy McCain, Mrs. Bill 
Kennedy, Mrs. Kermitt Cotney; 25 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren
