Ashland Progress
Funeral services for J. Gary Gortney, 49 of Cragford Rt. 1, were held at Mt. 
Zion Baptist Church on Dec. 14th at 3 o'clock p.m. with Rev. Grady Birchfield, 
Grady Harris, Bill Langley and Elmer Wheeles officiating. Interment was in 
adjacent cemetery with Blair Funeral Directors in charge. Pallbearers were five 
sons and a son-in-law, Clifton Patterson. Mr. Gortney passed away in Clay County 
Hospital at 4:15 a.m. on Dec. 14th, where he had been since being severely 
burned at his home eight days before. Survivors include five sons, James Paul, 
Charles Fred, Robert Alfred, Johnnie and Donald Gortney. One stepdaughter, Mrs. 
Dorothy Patterson His father, Joe Gortney, five brothers, William, Lois, Alfred, 
Walt and Hoyt Gortney; two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Denney and Mrs. Millie Denney; 
five grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death four months ago.
