Lineville Headlight
Burroughs Gray well known citizen of East Clay, was killed Monday morning about, 
eight o'clock by Z.T. Cook. The killing occurred at the home of Henry Foster 
about a quarter of mile beyond the Clay-Randolph line in Randolph County. It is 
alleged that Cook's and Foster's cows had been in Gray's corn and destroying it, 
and that Gray went to the home of Henry Foster, on whose place Cook was a 
tenant; to talk the matter over them. Gray was sitting on roots of a tree 
talking, when Cook approached him with a drawn knife. As Gray arose Cook caught 
around him with his left arm and began stabbing him with the knife with his 
right hand. He stabbed in back once or twice. Gray called for help saying Cook 
was killing him. Mr. Foster went to Gray's a rescue and then Cook stabbed him 
under the nipple in the region of the heart and Gray sank to the ground with 
these words "He has killed me" and immediately thereafter expired.  Both the 
sheriffs from Clay and Randolph Counties were called. Sheriff Allen arrived on 
the about 1 1/2 hour after the killing and traced Cook about two miles, but was 
unable to trace him further.
The deceased leaves a wife and children. He had taught school at different place 
in Clay County, but after several years had been engaged in farming and milling. 
He was highly esteemed by a large circle of neighbors and friends.
