By reason of good health and strength, he passed the 85th birthday by 17 days. He was one of the pioneers of this county, coming from [South] North Carolina when quite a lad and settled in Randolph County, later coming over in Clay. He married and reared fifteen children all surviving him, one died in infancy with diphtheria which made sixteen. Their names as follows oldest first: Sarah F, Knight, Roanoke. W. B. Gregg, Wadley, R 1. J. M. Gregg, Alexandria, Ala. J. J. Gregg, Santana, Tex. C. C. Gregg. Crossville, Ala. Rev. A. W. Gregg. Mt. Hope. C. N. Gregg, Lineville, R 2. R. C. Gregg, Lineville. R. 2, Susie R. Harris. Delta, R 2. Besides 84 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild survive this wonderful old man. His wife, who was Susan F, Dingier proceeded him some four years ago and they now sleep in the city of the dead at Black's Chapel. It was the request of the de ceased that Rev. F. J. Ingram, preach his funeral and use Rev. 7-13:14 for his subject. This was done and a great crowd attended these last services in token of respect reverence and friendship of this good man. The largest floral offering spoke the silent sentiment of admiration and expression of love of the surrounding country for the life that had just ended his career was not a pleasant one all the way. He served the civil war as a volunteer and was on the firing line at the surrender. He suffered several injuries and accidents causing his limbs to be broken, yet he has been able to be up and doing till just a few weeks ago. He knew the Bible and lived its teaching. The 15 children have their church membership He was more than 30 years a deacon in the Baptist church. Five boys could not attend the funeral.
